Tally Whackers Go to Disneyland

Tally Whacker 2011
Sunland Golf & Country Club - July 23 & 24

Won by Randy Russell

39 players - 6 rookies

Tally Whackers have now done Disneyland, completing another great year of spirited and fun (almost comedic) competition. We had 39 players and an honorary attendee. There were 6 rookies coming from as far away as Texas. The Grand Tallywhacker this year was Randy Russell with 21 points. Second place, for the second time, went to Jim Rozmaryn at 19.5, and third to rookie Jacob Evert with 18.

We had an amazing array of costumes ranging from the Mickey Mouse Club to Snow White (Ishta Nishio) and the seven dwarfs. Gary Alexander was Peter Pan, Don Lloyd as Donald Duck, and Steve Morrison shined as the Grand Wizard. However, by overwhelming consensus, Rick Olson, as Woody from Toy Story, walked away with costume of the tournament. In addition, Rick was also presented with a Lifetime Tally Whacker Award for his participation in 26 years of TW. No small achievement as Rick comes to us from Atlanta.

We all had a great time on the putter course on 5 holes designed and built by Bruce Colwell, James Tay, TC Campbell, Jim Rozmaryn, and Mike Pitcher. The competition was tight with Randy Russell, with a score of 20, crowned Grand Putter Whacker. There was a tie at 21 between Steve Morrison and Brad Moore, with Steve taking second and Brad third by hole elimination. Bob Pacquer was a close fourth at 22.

The horse race was, as usual, exciting and unpredictable. This year we had 19 teams and the final outcome was decided by a playoff on the 9th hole. A new format for the playoff was put in place by Randy Russell. The two teams tied for first after 9 holes, Jim Rozmaryn and Don Lloyd versus Brad Moore and Tyson Vallenari, were sent out to 100 yards to play in (alternate shot) and the lowest score wins. They tied and were sent back out to 150 yards to again play in for the lowest score. This time Jim Rozmaryn hit an amazing (Crown Royal assisted) shot from the 150 yard marker and he and Don went on to win the horse race. Brad and Tyson were second, Randy Russell and Jerry Cohn (rookie) were third, and Mac Mckern and Paul Lesh came in fourth.

The winner of the sword for K.P. on the horse race number 15 par three hole, was Bob (Mr. GTW) Pacquer. John Thorson was second and Mike Pinch third.

This year, like last year, the Saturday and Sunday scrambles featured creative (?) and interesting/challenging rules. Play out of sand on an odd and even hole, "Frasell" on number 7, and "Frasell" on par threes on Sunday. Another tester was the "must hit fairways" rule on all par fours on Saturday. That was the great equalizer.

The winning team on Saturday was Mike Temple, Tom Cannon, Terry Campbell, and rookie Jacob Evert with a score of 64. Sunday's winners were John Lindseth, Dennis Johnson, Art Tay, and Jacob (again) Evert, with a score of 64. Considering the pressure of the many rules, the winning scrambles on both days were amazing.

Both days we had contests for Long Drive and Centerline K.P. Saturday's LD was won by Mike Pinch and Centerline by Jonathon Matthews. Sunday LD went to Brian Bova and Centerline to rookie John Cohn.

KP winners were:
  Saturday     Sunday
#2 Bruce Colwell 5'2"   Mike Temple 24'5"
#5 Roger Francis 6'6"   Dennis Johnson 8'8"
#15 Gary Alexander 20'5"   Don "Bamby" Lloyd 0'0" - ACE
#17 James Tay 10'5"   Terry Campbell 9'0"

Don Lloyd scored only the second ace in TW history. The first went to Joe Alongi (former GTW) at Alderbrook in 2002.

It should be noted that after the tournament was over, Bob Pacquer took the KP Sword that he won this year, and had it engraved with Don Lloyd's name for his hole-in-one and presented it to Don at another tournament. Bob thought it seemed fitting that Don should possess the KP sword until the next Tally Whacker.

We held a raffle and all players were winners. However, the last 7 names called, larger prizes and the grand prize (a Toshiba laptop), were assigned putting holes for TW 2012. The grand prize and hole went to Jim Rozmaryn (took home a lot of loot this year), with the other holes going to Gary Alexander, Peter Flood, Mike Temple, Bruce Colwell, and James Tay. Art Nelson is the first alternate for a hole.

As always, we thank Tyler Sweet, Head Pro and General Manager, of Sunland. He always does a tremendous job of taking care of us both on the course and through his kitchen staff. The BBQ on Sunday is particularly good. We also want to acknowledge and thank the members of Sunland for making carts available to us as well as giving up the course for our tournament. We were again blessed with great weather and were welcomed heartily by the members.

Next year, we are scheduled for Sunland again July 28th and 29th. Our theme will be "Tallywhacker Super Heroes". Knowing this group, the costumes should be outstanding, if not bizarre.

Golf is not a game, it's bondage. It was obviously devised by a man torn with guilt, eager to atone for his sins.
