Tally Whacker 2010 Sunland Golf & Country Club - July 24 & 25
Won by Art Tay
35 players - 6 rookies
Tally Whacker 2010 is now in the record books with another great and entertaining year. We had 35 players this year including 6 highly spirited rookies. The Grand Tally
Whacker this year was Art Tay, otherwise known as Hop Sing Juarez and this year as Hop Sing Elvis. Art barely beat out Mac Mckern who came in second by
only one point.
This year's theme of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame brought out some curious costumes among the players. Ike and Tina Turner were represented by Roger Francis
and Steve Morrison respectively. They got so much into character that they entertained the troops with a rendition of "Proud Mary" at the dinner on
Saturday night. I'm sure all were delighted when the song was finally over! The highlight on the putting green Saturday morning was the arrival exactly
on time of the Margaritaville Volkswagen bus, complete with a host of Jimmy Buffets and a 12 volt margarita maker! The photos tell the story. Gary Alexander
was a complete Buddy Holly (check out the photo on the left side). Rookies Jeff Passey and Dane Ostrand were unmistakable as the Blues Brothers. Tom Thompson
appeared as Elvis in his older years and Burt Straight was none other than Alice Cooper. Mac Mckern came as the Rock and Roll Almanac to make sure
everyone represented was really in the Hall of Fame!
We had four putting holes this year and everyone seemed to like having one less challenge to have to negotiate. Thanks go out to Mike Pitcher, Burt Straight,
Tom Thompson and Art and James Tay for their efforts in making the putting contest a success. This year's newly crowned Grand Putter Whacker with a
score of 19 was Steve Morrison a.k.a. Ike Turner. Tied at 2nd place with a score of 20 was Mac Mckern and Stan Bosse. Roen Lindseth, a rookie, took
fourth.
As usual, the horserace was great fun. We had 17 teams starting out with the three remaining survivors going into the 9th hole. Stan Bosse and Sam
Storey came in third, with Gary Alexander and Art Tay coming in second. First prize went to Dennis Johnson and Jim Rozmaryn in an incredible show of skill
and talent(?). They had the second best score at the end of the first five holes, birdied the 6th hole and were not beat on any of the last three holes!
Along the way, Dennis took the KP on #15, being the closest of the 34 players shooting for the pin. Dennis is now the temporary owner of the KP sword.
As is always the case, the scrambles both Saturday and Sunday provided lots of laughs and great competition. Strange rules prevailed like hitting out
of sand traps, required first and second shots, the "Frasell" rule on par fives and some par threes, etc. KP's appeared on all par 4's and long drives were
contested on both days.
The winning team on Saturday was Bob Pacquer, Paul Lesh, Art Tay and rookie Doug Klan with a score of 66. They won in a playoff after a three-way tie.
On Sunday, with a score of 64, the winning team was comprised of John Lindseth, Mac McKern, Rookie Dane Ostrand and Mike Pitcher.
Ista Nishio was the long drive champ on Saturday (again) and Bob Pacquer (many time GTW) won long drive on Sunday.

Many many thanks go out to Tyler Sweet, Head Pro and General Manager of Sunland. He did a fantastic job of taking care of us and fulfilling all of our needs.
His staff were great and the food they prepared was incredible, especially the baked potato. We also want to thank the members of Sunland for being so generous
and lending us their carts and treating us so well as we played their course. We cannot say enough good things about the whole evolution!
Next year we are having it on the same weekend, JULY 23RD AND 24TH, 2011. Our theme next year will be "Tally Whackers go to Disneyland."
That ought to bring out some characters!
