The Tally Whackin' Laddies of Scotland

Tally Whacker 2009
Sunland Golf & Country Club - July 25 & 26

Won by Brad Moore

48 players - 6 rookies

As would be expected, Tally Whacker 2009 turned out to be another great event with 48 players in the field. This year we had 6 rookies. Similar to previous years, there were those who felt the weekend did not hold enough golf. To that end, 12 players began their odyssey on Thursday, playing 36 at White Horse while 8 others played 18 at Dungeness. On Friday, more Tally Whackers joined in to "warm up" for the big event over the weekend. 20 players played 18 and 20 played 36 at Dungeness on Friday.

Scottish costumes abounded on Saturday morning with the traditional kilt being the dress of choice. The photos tell it all. The "McVA" clan outdid themselves as they do every year arriving on the green as Braveheart, painted faces and all. Check out the photos to find out their "surprises" under their kilts. The effort put forth by all the players to honor the theme is simply amazing.

This year's putting holes reached new heights of creativity and effort. Andrys Gubens and Neil Macdonald built an impossible hole where the average score had to be 20 strokes. Their hole included a replica of the Swilcan bridge on the 18th hole of the Old Course in St. Andrews. Gary Alexander put together a hole replicating (?) the Scottish countryside complete with castle and sheep. Mike Pinch's hole might be called the Scottish toy hole with many stuffed toys, all wearing plaid! Mike Pitcher and his clan put together a "memory" hole with photos of our recent incredible trip to Scotland. Mike Temple built a very devious hole with many invisible wires which caused fits for everyone. If that wasn't enough, he also used a miniature hole rather than the standard golf hole. All in all, 5 incredible holes for putting. And many very very high scores.

This year's event was won by Brad Moore who is now our reigning Grand Tally Whacker. One might easily call Brad the most improved player of the tournament. In 2008, Brad was one of only 4 players out of 52 to receive NO points! This is very hard to do since we award points for everything except breathing! So he goes from no points to 20.5, winning the point total over second place finishers, Rookie Don Dalziel and McVA leader Mike Pitcher. Last year Brad got his name on the pink skirt trophy and this year he becomes one of the chosen few whose name appears on the perpetual Grand Tally Whacker trophy.

The Grand Putter Whacker trophy this year was awarded to Joe Alongi, Grand Tally Whacker 1989. Joe completed the five holes in 39 strokes, tied with rookie Lloyd Christensen, but won on a playoff. Third place went to Brad Moore three strokes behind the leaders.

As is always the case in Sequim, the weather was perfect and the hospitality provided by Tyler Sweet and this crew at Sunland was superb. Houses were rented, poker was played, pizza was consumed and some chose to lose their money at the nearby casino.

Tally Whacker 2010 will be held again at Sunland on July 24th and 25th. The theme for 2010 will be "The Tally Whackers' Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame."

Golf is like an 18-year-old girl with big boobs. You know it's wrong but you can't keep away from her.
