Tally Whacker 1998 was my first after living in Fiji. The theme that year was bring a gift for a fellow player. The specific requirements were as follows:

"The gift must cost at least $12.37. It cannot cost less but it may cost more. The gift may not be purchased from the pro shop at Alderbrook and the gift must be wrapped as to make it unidentifiable. The gift may not be golf balls and does not have to be golf related. You do not want to know what the fine will be if you show up without a gift."
As I recall, I fined Mike Pitcher for showing up with a large bag of Lays potato chips as his gift. He dutifully paid the fine. I later found out that it was not a bag of chips but rather a gift placed inside the bag and sealed so well that you could not tell it just came off the shelf. I was then forced to fine myself for not completing a thorough investigation.

Unfortunately, the actual results for this year have disappeared but at least we have the list of players. The Grand Tally Whacker that year was Mr. Randy Russell. We are not sure who won the Grand Putter Whacker that year but would love to find out for this was the year that our beloved Putter Whacker trophy departed and never returned. Thanks to Mike Pitcher’s generosity, another one eventually evolved.

It is almost impossible to remember how tragic a place this world is when one is playing golf.
